Amid Russia's massive air strikes on Ukraine, US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin have exchanged sharp statements. Trump called Putin "completely crazy", in response to which the Kremlin accused Trump of "emotional pressure"
Trump's criticism and Putin's response
- After Russia fired 367 drones and missiles on Ukraine, Trump wrote on social media, "Something has happened to Putin... he is killing people without any reason." He also said that Putin wants to occupy the whole of Ukraine, which will lead to the collapse of Russia.
- Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described Trump's statements as an "emotional reaction" and said, "This time is stressful for everyone, so such things happen".
Series of attacks on Ukraine
- Russia fired more than 900 drones and missiles in three nights, killing 13 civilians. Ukrainian President Zelensky called it a "political choice" by Putin, who wants to prolong the war.
International reactions
- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that distance restrictions on weapons supplied to Ukraine have been lifted. This will allow Ukraine to attack military bases in the interior of Russia.
- French President Macron hoped that Trump's statements would lead to new sanctions, but no such action has been taken so far.
Trump's peace efforts and criticism
- Trump held a two-hour phone conversation with Putin and proposed a 30-day ceasefire to Ukraine, which Russia rejected.
- Trump also targeted Zelensky, saying, "His statements are increasing problems".
Current state of the war
- Russia has occupied four villages in Ukraine's Sumy region, which is being described as an attempt to create a "buffer zone".
- Ukraine shot down 103 drones near Moscow in response to Russian drone attacks.
My opinion
The strategy of both leaders is clearly visible in this entire dispute. Trump wants to take the peace talks forward, but Putin is maintaining pressure on Ukraine by continuing the war. The lifting of arms ban by countries like Germany and France is a relief for Ukraine, but Russia is calling it "dangerous". In such a situation, the role of the international community becomes even more important.
